Background and Update as of March 1

We decided to start this Blog for Neil so that his friends and family can keep up with how he is doing day-to-day and check it at your own leisure rather than sending out numerous e-mails. We hope this helps. Please feel free to leave comments so that Neil can come back and read them later.

Background:

On Tuesday Feb 26, 2008 at 1:00pm Neil was in a terrible accident on Hwy 87 heading North. We want to first of all express our deepest appreciation and say a big thank you to the person who took Dad's name and number from Neil at the accident scene and call him. This allowed Dad to call Mom and for Mom to make it to the scene to be with Neil (she was already in Troy). We don't know who this is but we would like to thank you so much. Mom and Jerry DuBose were at the scene and were able to smile at Neil and give him the thumbs up at the scene. Neil was taken to Troy Regional Medical Center and then flown by Life-Flight to Montgomery Baptist South. Once here he was taken immediately into surgery. He had abdominal exploratory surgery and the Doctors stopped and corrected his internal bleeding. Once done with that, the orthopedic surgeon found a fracture of the right femur and severe injuries to his right ankle. The Doctors stabalized these with rods and pins. Neil was sedated and put on a ventilator to aid him in recovery. Neil's lung x-ray showed improvement from when he got to Troy Regional Ceneter.Neil was in surgery intensive care unit (SICU)at 9:30pm.

6:00 AM Report from Neil's night nurse, gave reports of lab work and stated Neil had a pretty good night. During the first visitation hour at 10am it was reported that his blood pressure had been low but it was due to dehydration and they increased his fluids and helped raise his blood pressure. He had an ultrasound of the heart and it was great!

Feb 28

6:00 am This morning the day nurse, reported that everything was ok. Later in the day the "Calvary" came by the name of the Trauma Physician. He is the only Certified Trauma Surgeon in Montgomery, Alabama. He just came in and took over. His plan was to send Neil for the full body scan and then take him into surgery and double check where they stopped the internal bleeding. He found a perferation in his colon and got it fixed. Neil was then put into the "Cadillac" bed. This bed has bumper pads all around him and it rotates from side to side. This is going to help Neil with not getting pnuemonia! Neil got back up into the SICU and the weekend night nurse came on duty and we got to meet him.

Feb 29

Neil's fever broke last night around midnight! That was a great thing to wake up to. The Orthopedist checked Neil's leg today and was planning to have to clean out the infection-but there was NONE! He also was able to report that there was NO break in the right elbow or wrist!! The weekend day nurse, let us know his fever came back around lunch but they gave him some Tylenol and it has come down. Today was good news!!

March 1

This morning they checked Neil's lungs and suctioned them out. They did a culture to try to find out what it is and they will find out in a few days. They went on to check his belly and see if they needed to clean in there anymore. They found that they did not have to do much and that his colon looks great! Neil is doing well. We then found out that his blood pressure is great! He's not on the medication for it anymore. Today has been a great day! Neil continues to run a temp but that is expected.
